James Negley Carte de Visite Signed Twice. 2.5" x 4", with no imprint on verso. A vignette torso-up portrait of the Union general, signed at the lower margin of the albumen "Jas. S Negley Major Genl U.S.V." On verso has been inscribed in ink, "Major Genl. Jas. S. Negley Pittsburgh Penna." James Scott Negley (1826-1901) organized and equipped Pennsylvania recruits. He performed well at Stone's River (Murfreesboro), where he led a counterattack against Confederate Major General Breckinridge's attack on the Union's flank. However, he was severely criticized for his actions, or lack thereof, while in command of the 2nd Division of Thomas' XIV Corps prior to the Battle of Chickamauga. This hit to his reputation basically ended his military career. After the war, Negley was elected to Congress and served from 1869 to 1875. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning throughout, with slightly worn corners. There is a small smudge at the "S." of Negley's signature on front. Remnants of what appears to have been tape on verso at the top, along with some pencil notations. Overall good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
