James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok: Very Rare Cabinet Photo of Iconic Image. On mount of Leadville photographer Meddaugh. At first glance this seems to be a copy image pirated from the famous photo of Hickok taken in 1873 while he was in New York to appear in Scouts of the Plains. However, there are subtle differences (look closely at the hat and the necktie), and it seems that what we have is a vintage cabinet photo of an artist's rendering of that familiar pose. Whether the changes were merely artistic license or were intended to change the image sufficiently to avoid any copyright infringement is an open question.

No doubt there was demand for Hickok photos in that area, and Meddaugh, not having a first generation image they could publish, did the next best thing. Condition is excellent save for a small red stain mark of an indeterminate nature. We have not made any attempt to see if it can be removed. Vintage inscriptions written on verso. 4.25" x 6.25".
