James B. Ricketts Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a chest-up portrait in uniform, with a Henry Ulke, Washington, D.C. backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "James B Ricketts Brig Genl."

A veteran of the Mexican War and Seminole War, James Ricketts (1817-1887) participated in the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. Following the battle, news of his death, along with his sword and final words, were delivered to his wife. After a harrowing journey through enemy territory, she found him, wounded in three places and near death in a field hospital on the Bull Run battlefield. Ricketts was tended to and then sentenced to the notorious Libby Prison where he was confined, still very ill, for several weeks. He was finally released and sent to Fairfax to recover. By the spring of 1862, Ricketts was promoted to brigadier-general and given a new assignment, only to be wounded again at Antietam and later, at Cedar Creek.

Condition: Light edge toning at the bottom. Soiling to the right of Ricketts' head. Minor wear to the corners. Faded pencil notations on verso.
