Sarah "Sassy" Vaughan, also known as "The Divine One", was a jazz singer from New Jersey. She began singing at nightclubs as a teenager and ultimately dropped out of high school to pursue a music career. In the early 1940s, Vaughan joined Billy Eckstine's band, but left shortly after to begin a solo career. Over the course of her career, Vaughan won four Grammy Awards, an NEA Jazz Masters Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1985, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was soon after inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame.

Herman Leonard graduated from Ohio University and was apprenticed to Yousuf Karsh in Ottawa, Canada. Later, his interest in the jazz scene took him to New York, where he established his own studio and shot publicity portraits for up and coming jazz musicians. Among some of his subjects were Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Quincy Jones.
