    Description

Hand-Tinted Wet-Plate Collodion Vintage Print. This deep sepia colored photograph is likely a wet-plate collodion image that was hand-tinted after it was developed. The pink tint on the rag next to the young boy runs outside of the lines. The men in the picture are tinted masterfully, with light blues and pinks. The collodion process was introduced around 1851 and provided a way for producing a photographic negative as the basic element for producing engravings or prints. Colloid is actually the name of the solution used in the process; it consists of cellulose nitrate and potassium iodide. This simple alcohol-ether solution allowed for negatives to be produced much easier, and made photographs and prints much more available for everyday people. This image here depicts four Asian men working on bronze ware at the N. Nogawa factory in Kioto (Kyoto) Japan. The Japanese were some of the earliest people to begin working with bronze and their skill and craftsmanship is evidence of this. This is a wonderful vintage photograph. A fantastic, clear, and intriguing image. The condition of the photograph is pristine, no visible damage at all!
