    Description

Hand Colored Vivandière Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with no imprint on verso. An unidentified young woman posed wearing a decorated headpiece and a short skirt, holding an American flag. The red elements of the photograph have been hand colored, including the woman's hat, short jacket, button and skirt, as well as the stripes of the flag. Vivandières, also sometimes called cantinières, were women who followed the armies and served as canteen keepers or sutlers. The practice originated in 1793, but was adopted in the U.S. after American officers sent to observe the Crimean War witnessed the women in Europe. Vivandières served on both sides as a way for patriotic women to become involved in the war effort. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning around the edges, with minor soiling and wear at the corners. Further toning on verso, along with a small pencil notation. Overall very good.
