Guard Mount at Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory: Stereoview by F. Jay Haynes, Circa 1877. A rare stereoview of the guard mount at the Fort Lincoln. 7th Cavalry soldiers stand in a row across the plane of the image with their backs to the viewer. The barracks are visible in the background. Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory, was headquarters for both infantry and cavalry troops in order to protect Northern Pacific Railroad construction workers. Major General George Armstrong Custer, being the first commanding officer with his famous 7th Cavalry, was sent to command Fort Lincoln. The rest is history. This image is from the series "Scenery Along the Line of the Northern Pacific Rail Road," photographed and published by F. Jay Haynes, Moorhead, Minnesota, 1877. Frank Jay Haynes was the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad, documenting the landscapes and sights along the track running across the northern tier of the country. Photographs are mounted on Haynes' light green Black Hills Stereographs mount. Studio imprint on verso. Some minor toning staining on mount. 7" x 4".
