Geronimo and Natches: An Important Large Photo by C.S. Fly, Famous Tombstone Photographer. Depicted are the two Apache leaders on horseback. Standing beside Geronimo are his son and presumed grandchild. This extraordinary photo, which captures the men's fierce determination so effectively, was taken at Geronimo's camp prior to his surrender to General Crook. On verso, Fly states: "this group was taken by special request of Geronimo", and we may well speculate that the weary Apache chief, knowing his surrender was imminent, wished the photographer to capture himself and his associates as he wished to be remembered. The photo is stamped on both sides: "Copyright 1886, By C.S. Fly, Tombstone , Ariz."

The image is very sharp and strong, and essentially in very good condition. Some light staining, not affecting the central figures, could quite possibly be removed by a good photo conservator. For strictest accuracy we note a few tiny black spots near the upper right-hand corner. 8.5" x 5.25", including mount. From the estate collection of E.F. Mueller.
