George H. Thomas Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a seated portrait of Thomas in uniform and holding a sword, with no backstamp. Signed below the image: "Geo H Thomas Maj Genl U.S.V." Written on verso in an unknown hand reads, "Maj Gen Thomas June 23d 1863 Murfreesboro, Tenn."

George Thomas (1816-1870) served with distinction throughout the war and was a principal commander in the Western Theater. He earned several nicknames including "The Rock of Chickamauga," "The Sledge of Nashville," and "Slow Trot Thomas," the latter acquired as a consequence of his slow, deliberate nature of command. While he is sometimes overlooked in the history books, some scholars have argued that he was perhaps the most talented general in the Union army.

Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout. Soiling at the edges. Further foxing on verso. There are a few minor scratches or imperfections to the photograph.
