George A. Custer Carte de Visite Signed
"Yours truly G A Custer." 2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co., Washington D.C. & New York imprint on verso. A vignette portrait of the flamboyant general, wearing his signature wide brimmed hat. The card is captioned as being "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." According to Custer in Photographs, this image, labeled K-77V, was taken sometime around March 23 1865, before he mustered out of the volunteers and reverted to the rank of captain. Custer is most remembered for his "Last Stand" against the Lakota and Cheyenne alliance of Native Americans at the Battle of Little Big Horn, where he and his cavalrymen were overwhelmed by superior numbers and all killed.
