Freed Slave Child Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4". This scarce and fascinating CDV identifies a former slave child freed by Union Colonel William J. Palmer of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. The child was subsequently employed by the regiment. Penned in ink on the revers: "'Pick' our boy whom Col. P. abducted to Kline[?]. March 1864." After being "abducted," Pick served the cavalry regiment as a farrier. The few CDVs that feature slaves or former slaves rarely identify their subjects. Penciled notations on the reverse suggest that the boy worked with "Saddler Geo. H. Kline." Throughout the latter part of the Civil War, the 15th Regiment served in Tennessee in the Department of the Cumberland, where they came across Pick. Backstamped by photographer Morgan & Brusstar of Philadelphia. Minor spotting and soiling.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
