    Description

Frances Clalin Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with an S. Masury, Boston imprint on verso. A seated portrait of Clalin, seated on a decorative chair, with her saber unsheathed and resting on her shoulder. Frances Clalin Clayton enlisted in the Union Army to fight next to her husband, Elmer L. Clayton. Both enlisted in a Missouri regiment, despite the fact that they lived in Minnesota. Tragically, her husband was killed during the Battle of Stones River in December 1862. Clalin continued to serve in the army, and it is believed that she fought at Fort Donelson and at least seventeen other engagements. During her service, she was wounded several times and even taken prisoner on one occasion. Though the details are unclear, her identity was discovered sometime in 1863, and she was discharged from service. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Toning and minor soiling around the edges. There is a small ink notation on verso at the top left corner. Overall good.
