    Fort Sumter with Confederate Flag Stereoview. 6.75" x 3.25", on a red mount, featuring a view of the interior of Fort Sumter, following the Confederate bombardment and occupation. The Confederate flag has been installed on the ramparts. There are a few soldiers seen standing and seated in the open courtyard. Written on verso in black ink, "Interior - The Building in the distance is the Barracks of the Privates the flag staff in front which was shot away during the engagement. The flag now waving over Fort Sumter to the right."

    Confederate forces demanded that General Anderson surrender Fort Sumter on April 11, 1861. When Anderson refused, Confederate batteries began their bombardment at 4:30 A.M. the following morning. The firing lasted for 34 hours, and the fort was eventually surrendered and evacuated on April 13. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: Some minor imperfections at the top right corner of the left photograph. Light wear and rubbing at the corners and edges. A small area of dampstaining at the top and bottom edges. Some pencil doodles on verso.
