    Description

Fitz John Porter Carte de Visite Signed "F. J. Porter Maj. Genl." 2.5" x 4", with no imprint on verso. A vignette profile portrait of Major General Porter, seen in his military uniform. Signed at the lower margin of the albumen. The card has been mounted onto another blank card so that the back is covered. Porter fought in the Mexican-American War prior to his service in the Union Army. He was promoted to colonel of the 15th Infantry in May 1861 and later received a divisional command under General McClellan. He served with distinction at key battles such as the Yorktown, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, and Antietam. Unfortunately, when McClellan was replaced by John Pope, Porter publicly denounced him. This earned him a court-martial, and he was later convicted and dismissed from the army on January 21, 1863. Porter would be unable to clear his name until 1878. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Lightly toned throughout, with some uneven spotting and soiling. Boldly signed. There is some light creasing at the middle left side. As mentioned, the back is not visible because the CDV has been mounted onto another card.
