    Description

Fantastic Half Plate Daguerreotype of California Gold Rush Mining Scene ca. 1850s. Image is of an open pit mine at an undisclosed northern California location. It depicts the signs of cooperation in this large mining venture, as all the miners are working these diggings together, moving countless wheelbarrows of rock, gravel, and dirt to the surface for sluicing to find those elusive gold nuggets. These California miners took time out of their busy quest for gold to have this fantastic photograph taken, all of these California gold rush men are posing for the photographer. A scarce image with 17 men working their claim, they have built a wooden trough and pelton wheel to transfer water to the diggings. In the background there is a miners tent just above the diggings. Great daguerreotype of California Gold Rush. Has an unbroken seal & great leather case. Measures approximately 5.50" x 4.25".

The California gold rush forty-niners, in their unrelenting quest for gold nuggets, decimated the California mountain areas around them, not caring about the environment they were in. They dammed rivers, logged the forests for timber, and washed hillsides bare. The search for gold is evident in this daguerreotype.

    Condition:
Very fine, great contrast, two small spots at top, discoloration around edges of mat.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
