Elmer Ellsworth Carte de Visite with Printed Signature, "Your Friend E.E. Ellsworth." 2.5" x 3.75", with a Silsbee, Case & Co., Boston imprint on verso. A small oval portrait of the young Union officer, seen in an elaborate uniform and cap, with three large medals pinned to his chest. Signed on the albumen below the photograph. On verso has been written in pencil, "Ephraim E. Ellsworth Union Zouave Col 1st CW Martyr. Civil War."

Ellsworth, a close friend of Lincoln, was a very early casualty of the war, being shot by the proprietor of the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia after he hauled down the Confederate flag. Enemy territory was just across the Potomac from the capital, and it grated on the president that the flag could be seen from the Executive Mansion. The man responsible for Ellsworth's death, James W. Jackson, was killed in the fight that ensued after Ellsworth was shot. In tribute, the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment adopted the nickname "Ellsworth Avengers" and Lincoln brought the body back to the White House to lay in state. Ellsworth was only 24 when he died. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning throughout, with minor spots of soiling around the edges and on verso. Minor wear to the corners. Boldly signed by Ellsworth. Overall very good.
