    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. Vintage Proof Print from The North American Indian: "Canon de Chelly - Navaho". A wonderful example of Curtis' most iconic image. Image size 15.5" x 11" on 18.75" x 14.75" paper in an archival 22" x 18" mat. Plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1904 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure John Andrew & Son." Proof prints were a crucial part of Curtis' mastering process to achieve the final state of his photogravures. As such, they are an extremely important link in the creation of The North American Indian. Proof prints are extremely scarce and each is unique.

Canyon de Chelly, located in Northeastern Arizona in the heart of Navaho country is one of the most sacred places for the tribe. In this image, seven Native Americans on horseback ride across a barren and majestic desert landscape. Curtis provided the following description when this image was published as Plate 28 of Portfolio 1 of The North American Indian: "A wonderfully scenic spot is this in northeastern Arizona, in the heart of the Navaho country - one of their strongholds, in fact. Cañon de Chelly exhibits evidences of having been occupied by a considerable number of people in former times, as in every niche at every side are seen the cliff-perched ruins of former villages." Pristine condition. A great opportunity.
