Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. "The Three Chiefs" Goldtone in Original Frame. "The Three Chiefs" is one of Curtis' top five most desirable and sought after images in the goldtone process, and historically his single most important photograph. Image size 14" x 11". Frame size: 19" x 16". Negative is dated circa 1900, goldtone is dated circa 1900-1910. Signed, "Curtis" in the negative. This iconic and majestic image shows three Native American chiefs on horseback in a prairie landscape. Curtis provided the following description when this image was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian: "Three proud old leaders of their people. A picture of the primal upland prairies with their waving grass and limpid streams. A glimpse of the life and conditions which are on the verge of extinction."
Goldtone, or Orotone, is a printing process pioneered by Curtis, and his favored method of producing images. Images are printed directly on glass and backed with golden metallic particles. The end result has a luminosity and three-dimensionality not found in any other medium.
Overall condition is good to very good. Gold-backing and emulsion loss at edges, from original framing needles, not uncommon with vintage Curtis goldtones. Gold-backing can be restored. Beautifully presented in classic "Batwing" frame, designed by Curtis. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
