    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. "Signal to the Mountain God", a Rare Vintage Curtis Goldtone in Classic Original "Batwing" Frame. A fine, open example of this classic Curtis image, first published in Marah Ellis Ryan's Flute of the Gods in 1909. Image size 11" x 14". Frame size: 16" x 19". Negative is dated circa 1909, goldtone is dated circa 1910. Signed, "Curtis" in the negative.

This haunting image shows a native American brave in a loin cloth lighting a fire atop a boulder.

Goldtone, or Orotone, is a printing process pioneered by Curtis, and his favored method of producing images. Images are printed directly on glass and backed with golden metallic particles. The end result has a luminosity and three-dimensionality not found in any other medium.

Overall condition is excellent, minor gold-backing loss at edges, common with Curtis vintage goldtones, visible only on close inspection. Goldtone has been archaically re-backed and sealed. Beautifully presented in classic "Batwing" frame, designed by Curtis. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
