    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. Rare, Possibly Unique Vintage Platinum Print: Untitled - (Variant of "Curley - A Crow"). This rare vintage print measure 11.5 x 15.75", and is mounted to an overall size of 12 x 16.25". The photograph was made in Montana in 1905. The subject wears a full war bonnet with eagle feathers, owl feathers, ermine, and, in front, a bird's head with beak (probably a woodpecker - a sacred symbol to many Native Americans.) He wears a single strand choker with a center disc. He gazes to left, offering a three-quarter view.

This large format print is highly desirable to Curtis collectors both because it may be the only evidence that survives of a negative that presumably no longer exists and because it is in the rare platinum printing process. Crisp, strong original signature in ink at lower right corner, "Curtis". Blindstamp at lower left "Copyright 1905 by E.S. Curtis".

Overall condition is excellent. Extremely minor, scattered burnishing and soiling at some high points of the surface texture, visible only on close inspection and typical of many Curtis prints of this vintage. Print quality is excellent and original ink is strong. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
