Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. Photogravure from The North American Indian: "Cayuse Warrior" Plate 272. This original vintage photogravure, from The North American Indian, measures 11" x 15.5" on 18" x 21.75" handmade Japanese gampi ("tissue") paper. Plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure John Andrew & Son."

A powerful portrait of an America Indian brave from the Cayuse tribe of northeastern Oregon. The subject is wears a full feather headdress and a determined expression.

This image was Plate 272 in portfolio XIII.

Gampi paper is the rarest and most expensive of three original paper stock chosen by Curtis and J.P. Morgan for Curtis' North American Indian project. Due to the expense, it is estimated that only 10% of Curtis' photogravures were made on this rare hand-made paper, known for subtlety, luminosity and strength.

Overall condition is excellent. Very minor creasing at the left margin of image. This print has been archivally washed and de-acidified. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.
