    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer. "Canyon de Chelly" Vintage Goldtone in Original Frame. A fine example of a Curtis' most iconic image. Image size 14" x 11". Frame size: 19" x 16". Negative is dated circa 1904, goldtone is dated circa 1905. Signed, "Curtis" in the negative.

Canyon de Chelly, located in Northeastern Arizona in the heart of Navaho country is one of the most sacred places for the tribe. In this image, seven Native Americans on horseback ride across a barren and majestic desert landscape. Curtis provided the following description when this image was published as a photogravure in The North American Indian: "A wonderfully scenic spot is this in northeastern Arizona, in the heart of the Navaho country - one of their strongholds, in fact. Cañon de Chelly exhibits evidences of having been occupied by a considerable number of people in former times, as in every niche at every side are seen the cliff-perched ruins of former villages."

Overall every good to excellent condition with gold-backing and emulsion anomalies, not uncommon with vintage Curtis goldtones. Archivally re-backed and sealed. Beautifully presented in original frame.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
