    Description

Edward S. Curtis, Photographer: "Before the Storm" Vintage Goldtone in Original Frame. This is one of Curtis' most desirable and sought-after goldtones, and one of his most dramatic photographs. Image size 13.5" x 10.375". Frame size: 18.75" x 15.75". This beautiful goldtone was created circa 1906. Signed, "©" in the negative at lower left corner. Original studio price sticker at lower right corner of verso, "...price of this Curttone is $15.00 The North American Indian".

The scene of this classic early Curtis photograph is in Apache-land in present day Arizona. Dramatic clouds fill the sky before a storm breaks. The four individual riders are from the White Mountain Apache tribe who were believed to number approximately 2,000 tribal members living in this area. The dramatic lighting, back lit subjects, and narrow depth of field were all aspects of Curtis' Pictorial aesthetic. It appeared in photogravure as Portfolio Plate No. 9 in Volume One of The North American Indian. Curtis's caption reads: "A scene in the high mountains of Apache-land just before the breaking rainstorm."

Goldtone, or Orotone, is a printing process pioneered by Curtis, and his favored method of producing images. Images are printed directly on glass and backed with golden metallic particles. The end result has a luminosity and three-dimensionality not found in any other medium.

Overall condition is excellent. A similar 14" x 11" vintage goldtone of this same image was sold at auction in May 2011 at Sotheby's Paris for a record-breaking $104,818 (€72,750). This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from leading Curtis expert Christopher Cardozo.
