    Description

    Drummer Boy Tintype.
    2" x 3.5"
    No place; circa 1865

A portrait of a young African-American drummer boy, with hand painted uniform trim and buttons. The boy, perhaps only 14-16 years old, stands proudly in his uniform with his drum slung over his right shoulder. Those who were too young to enlist as regular soldiers often filled the position of drummer boy, but these young boys still played a crucial part in the army. Drums were used as a method of communication on the battlefield, and drummers had to learn dozens of drum calls. In addition to these duties, drummer boys were often tasked with aiding the medical staff in field hospitals.

Condition: There are some small surface scratches throughout, which do not detract from the image. The bottom right corner appears to have been slightly bent at one time, causing some slight creasing damage. There is wear along the edges, else good.
