    Description

Double Hanging: An Important Identified Hanging at Fort Scott, Kansas, Shot with a Flash at Night. Captioned by the photographer: "George and Ed Silsbee Hanged by a Mob of Citizens in Front of Jail, Jan. 20, 1900. Fort Scott, Kan. Flash Light by Dabbs." The brothers (better known as George and Ed Meeks) had been convicted of a particularly violent murder, leading a mob to break into the jail and drag them outside to be hanged. (Graphic details of the crime and hanging are presented in an accompanying newspaper clipping.)

A photograph of a double hanging is rare enough, but this nighttime image is truly remarkable. The lighting effectively captures the faces of the dead men and the mob members against a dark background. The two men still wear their handcuffs and leg shackles, as they were dragged from the jail.

Night photography in that era was rare, and it must have been quite a feat to light such a large area (the two men are suspended about 20 feet apart). James V. Dabbs (1854-1918) was a well-known photographer with a photography studio and framing gallery in Fort Scott. He was active beginning in the 1880s.

This is a truly remarkable photo, measuring 8.5" x 6.25" (the mount appears to have been trimmed). Excellent condition, with minor aging in the borders area.
