Dorothy Van Engle Family Photo Album.
    Photographs of varying size
    Album: 9.5" x 5.75"
    Atlantic City; 1929-1936

A group of approximately 165 photographs of actress Dorothy Van Engle and her family and friends, dating from early in her life and career. In the album, she is identified as "Sug". Includes names, dates, places and nicknames to identify those in the photographs. Van Engle is seen in photographs from around the age 13 to 21. The album includes images of her mother, father, grandparents, friends, and her husband Herbie, as well as many others. There are a few photographs of her stepfather, Arvelle Harris, who played in Cab Calloway's Band. One photograph shows a fieldtrip taken by the dressmaking class of Brooklyn Industrial High School; Dorothy was known for making all of her dresses for the roles in which she starred.

Dorothy Van Engle (1910-2004) was an icon in Black Film Cinema, and helped open the door for future black actors. Unlike many other African-American actresses, she was not typecast as stereotypically "black" characters and got to play a wide variety of roles. She became the favorite of director Oscar Micheaux and went on to appear in four of his films: Harlem After Midnight (1934), Murder in Harlem (1935), God's Step Children (1938) and Swing! (1938). After Micheaux stopped directing in the 1940s, Van Engle faded from the public eye.

Condition: The album is missing the string from its binding. There is heavy wear to the leather cover. Some album pages are chipped, and a few photographs are missing. Light wear, toning, and soiling to some photographs, else good.
