    Daniel Butterfield Carte de Visite Signed "Danl Butterfield." 2.25" x 4", with an R. W. Addis Photographer, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A vignette portrait of the Union general, seen in profile and dressed in his military uniform. Signed at the bottom of the albumen. Daniel Butterfield (1831-1901) was Chief of Staff for Joe Hooker and fought at the Peninsula, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Chattanooga and the Atlanta Campaign. He designed the Federal system of corps badges and has been credited with composing "Taps. Butterfield's reputation was somewhat tarnished after he became involved in the feud between generals Burnside and Meade. However, he later was issued the Congressional Medal of Honor, 30 years after the fact, for his heroism at Gaines' Mill. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout. Corners are slightly bumped, else very good. Boldly signed.
