    Description

Sixth-Plate Daguerreotype of Robert S. Neighbors, circa 1847. 3" x 3.75". Neighbors is seen in this chest up portrait sporting a large brimmed hat, black frock coat, white shirt, waistcoat, and wearing a thick beard. Photograph is exceptionally clear and details such as age spots can be seen on the hand. Mounted in a leatherette case with floral motif and framed by a gold mat. Minor scuffing.

Robert Neighbors (1815-1859) was an important figure in Texas during the 1840s and 1850s. During the 1840s, he served as a Ranger under Jack Hays and began his career as an Indian Agent (1845). By the 1850s, he had become the leading Texas authority on Indian affairs, working closely with Rangers such as Rip Ford. Since he was a Democrat, the new Whig president in 1849 - Zachary Taylor-replaced him as agent, but Democrat Franklin Pierce, only weeks after beginning his term in 1853, reappointed Neighbors. Six years after receiving this appointment, Neighbors, who held controversial views on Indians, was assassinated.
