    Description

Quarter Plate Cased Daguerreotype of a California Gold Rush Man Holding a Large Gold Nugget Ca. 1850s. Fantastic daguerreotype of an unidentified California Gold Rush miner. The man is posing for the photographer sitting at a table with his California gold mining scales to left and holding a large gold nugget. The photographers tinting shows great detail of this mans fancy vest, tie, and his pride and joy (the gilded large gold nugget). It is believed that there are blasting caps in the jar. This image has great content.

In 1848, James Marshall was surveying the water course of a sawmill he was building on the American River (California). He bent down to pick up a shiny metal object which turned out to be a gold nugget. Marshall touched off the chain of events that would culminate in the greatest of all western gold rushes. Within a year, the 49ers, as they came to be known, made the mad scramble by the thousands for the "New El Dorado." California gold fever spread like wildfire, luring prospective miners from around the world. The California Gold rush was on. This daguerreotype is a remnant of the California gold rush era.

    Condition:
Very good-fine, image has a couple of flaking spots, and touch of light toning.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
