    Description

New England Mariner's Daguerreotypes and Books. Group of four items identified to mid-19th century Massachusetts sea captain Alpheus Baker. Included are the following items: 1/4th plate daguerreotype of the crusty old salt mounted in a lavishly decorated wood and gesso frame with an overall size of 9.75" x 10.5". A heavy card on the back helps secure the image and is inscribed, "Father Capt Alpheus Baker Forty Eight years of age." The frame has minor chips, splits while the image is haloed about the edges; Cased pair of 1/6th plate daguerreotypes presenting Baker and his wife as individual subjects. The case is worn as expected with a somewhat loose spine, however the images are in excellent shape; Account book for the schooner Narragansett, approximately 150 pages, hardcover, 8vo (6.5" x 8"), entries spanning February 25, 1842 - March 25, 1845. An enlightening glimpse of the costs associated with maintaining a sailing ship. Captain Baker here itemizes cash out for payroll, port fees, and provisions. Some wear to covers, else very good condition; Book, The New American Practical Navigator (New York: Edmund M. Blunt, 1821), fifth edition, 596 pages with numerous diagrams, calfskin covers with protective cloth, 8vo (5.5" x 9"). The front flysheet is inscribed, "Alpheus Baker Book Bought in New York Price three Dollars Fifty Cents". Worn covers with internal light foxing and stains. Good condition overall with tight binding. An especially cohesive lot from the waning days of American sailing.
