    Description

Confederate Richard C. Morgan Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with a John L. Gihon's, Philadelphia imprint on verso. A bust portrait of Morgan dressed in his uniform. Morgan has inscribed on verso "Yr affect. Cousin R. C. Morgan Col C.S.A. Morgan's Div Cavy Ft Delaware May 16, 64." Colonel Richard Morgan (1836-1918) was the younger brother of famed General John H. Morgan and served on the staffs of Generals John Breckenridge and A.P. Hill. He later joined the 14th Kentucky Cavalry and helped lead Confederate forces into Ohio as part of Morgan's Raid of July 1863. However, he, and approximately 750 other men from Morgan's forces, were captured by the Union. He was imprisoned until August of 1864, when he was exchanged. This photograph was taken while Morgan was being held as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. After the war, he became a civil engineer and worked for the railroads. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Minor soiling throughout, with a small amount of spotting on Morgan's face. Else good.
