    Description

Confederate General Joseph Wheeler War-Dated Letter Signed and Carte de Visite. The one page letter ("Head Qrs Cav. Corps. / Gadsden, Ala," August 24, 1863) is addressed to Colonel George William Brent and reads, "Having received information that many deserters are passing down the Rail Road running from Blue Mountain to Selma. I have the honor to ask if it would not be advisable to place a Guard of an officer and a few men on the trains between Blue Mountain and Talladega." Two days later an endorsement was written by adjutant Kinloch Falconer "By command of General [Braxton] Bragg" leaving this matter "entirely to the discretion of Maj. Genl. Wheeler." With expected soiling. The fold has been minimally repaired by archival tape.

The rare CDV (2.5" x 4", circa 1864) features the general sitting in his double-breasted Confederate frock coat. Stamped below the image by photographer Webster & Bros. of Louisville. Some age toning and light staining.

Thrice wounded and a survivor of sixteen horses that were shot out from under him, the fortunate Wheeler served the Confederacy as a senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee. At the end of the century, he served as a general in the U.S. Army, giving him the rare distinction of providing war-time service as a general for two opposing sides.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
