    Description

Confederate Colonel (later General) William D. Pender Envelope Signed with Carte de Visite. Pender's signature is scarce and desirable since he died at the age of twenty-nine from wounds received on the second day at Gettysburg. At the time, General Lee considered Pender to be one of his most promising officers. The future general has signed the war-dated envelope (5.5" x 3") in the upper left corner, "W. D. Pender / Col. 6th N.C. I[nfantry] Troops." He has also addressed the envelope to his wife, "Mrs W. D. Pender." The envelope bears a postmark and postage-due stamp. The CDV (2.5" x 4") features a bust view of the general in Confederate uniform. Stamped on the reverse by Vannerson & Jones of Richmond. Some age-toning and minor soiling. Pender, West Point class of 1854, was promoted to brigadier general in 1862 for valor during the Battle of Seven Pines. At Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, he was hit in the leg by a shell fragment. Because of an infection the leg was amputated during the retreat back to Virginia, but he failed to recover and died on July 18.
