Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: Simon Bolivar Buckner, John C. Breckinridge, Lawrence O'Bryan Branch, Braxton Bragg and Franklin Buchanan. Five (5) cartes including unmarked Simon Bolivar Buckner (1823-1914); John C. Breckinridge (1821-1875) by E & H.T. Anthony, New York; Lawrence O'Bryan Branch (1828-1862) by Anthony, New York; Franklin Buchanan (1800-1874) by E. & H. T. Anthony; and Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) by C. D. Fredricks, New York. Buckner surrendered Fort Donelson, but distinguished himself at Perryville and served as Chief-of-Staff to Kirby Smith. Branch served under A. P. Hill and Stonewall Jackson. He fought at the Seven Days' Campaign, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Harper's Ferry and Antietam, where he was killed by a sharpshooter. Buchanan was a career sailor. A native of Maryland, he resigned his commission anticipating the secession of that state, then tried to withdraw it when that didn't happen, but too late! Welles spurned him, so Franklin signed up with the Confederates, eventually becoming the only full Admiral in the CSA navy. He commanded the U.S.S. Virginia and was later captured when Farragut took Mobile Bay. The Anthony carte shows him in his United States uniform.
