    Description

Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: Roger Atkinson Pryor, Thomas Lafayette Rosser, Robert Emmett Rodes and Gabriel James Rains. Four (4) cartes including Roger Atkinson Pryor (1828-1919) by C. D. Fredricks & Company, New York; an unmarked Thomas Lafayette Rosser (1836-1910); Robert Emmett Rodes (1829-1864); and Gabriel James Rains (1803-1881). Both Rodes (some foxing on image) and Rains cartes are by E & H.T. Anthony, New York. Pryor, A Virginia-born politician and newspaper publisher, agitated strongly for secession. As a colonel of infantry, he fought at Williamsburg, Seven Days Campaign, Second Bull Run, Antietam and Chancellorsville where he was captured and imprisoned. He was active in scouting and intelligence gathering during his war service. Rosser, a close friend of George Custer, had a great deal of flair. Besides seeing action in the Peninsula Campaign (wounded), he conducted numerous raids in West Virginia and briefly managed to evade capture when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Rodes, a VMI graduate and instructor, had a distinguished war record. He was twice wounded (Seven Pines and Antietam, where his regiments held the line at "Bloody Lane"). He assisted Stonewall Jackson's flank attack at Chancellorsville, took some missteps at Gettysburg, redeemed himself at the "Bloody Angle" at Spotsylvania, but was killed at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864. The signature on the carte does not appear to be his. Raines served in the Seminole and Mexican Wars and is best remembered for his controversial innovation of planting mines, both on land and in waterways. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
