Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: Alfred Jefferson Vaughn, Jr., David Addison Weisiger, Earl Van Dorn, David Emanuel Twiggs and Robert A. Toombs. Five (5) cartes including an unmarked Alfred Jefferson Vaughn, Jr. (1830-1899); David Addison Weisiger (1818-1899), bottom mount cut off without affecting image; Earl Van Dorn (1820-1863); David Emanuel Twiggs (1790-1862); and Robert A. Toombs (1810-1885). Weisiger, Van Dorn, Twiggs, and Toombs cartes are by Anthony, New York, with the Toombs carte from a negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Vaughan lead Tennessee troops at Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. He had eight horses shot out from under him and had a leg blown off at Vining's Station. Weisiger was wounded at Second Bull Run and at the Battle of the Crater. He also fought at Seven Pines, Cold Harbor and Spotsylvania. Van Dorn was a colorful cavalry commander, placed in charge of the Trans-Mississippi Department. He was defeated at Pea Ridge and Corinth, but bounced back at Holly Springs and Thompson's Station. Ever the ladies' man, he was killed by an irate husband on May 7, 1863. Twiggs fought in the War of 1812, the Mexican War and against the Comanches in Texas. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, he handed over all Federal property and troops in Texas to Col. Ben McCulloch. Toombs was a career politician who served as Confederate Secretary of War and fought at the Seven Days Campaign and Antietam where he was badly wounded. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
