    Description

Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: Alexander H. Stephens [Signed], William Smith, Martin Luther Smith and George Hume Steuart. Four (4) cartes including an unmarked Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883; William Smith (1797-1887), top and bottom mount cut off without affecting image; Martin Luther Smith (1819-1866), which is trimmed and slightly foxed; and George Hume Steuart (1828-1903). William Smith, Martin Luther Smith, and Steuart are by E & H.T. Anthony, New York. The Steuart carte is from a photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. The Stephens carte has a line of glue residue at the very top. A previous inscription was removed at the bottom, then signed "Alexander H. Stephens 1866." It displays quite well and is an unusual image. "Extra Billy" Smith was a career politician, twice Governor of Virginia. He was 63 years old when the war broke out, but was commissioned a colonel. He fought at First Bull Run, Seven Pines, Antietam (wounded three times) and Gettysburg, where his lack of tactical skill became apparent. Martin Smith, a native New Yorker, was primarily an engineer occupied with defenses. He fought at Vicksburg and served under David Twigg, Robert E. Lee, John Bell Hood and Dabney Maury. Steuart, a Marylander, fought at First Bull Run, Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Cross Keys (wounded), Spotsylvania (captured) and Petersburg. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
