    Description

    The original salt print portrait

Colonel John Coffee "Jack" Hays Full-Plate Salt Print Portrait, circa 1858. 7" x 9". This important photograph belonged to Mathew Brady, who also served as the photographer. Written in pencil on the verso in Brady's hand: "Colonel Jack Hayes. Now lives in California. Mexican War." According to our research, this is the only extant original print.

The photograph features a bearded Hays (1817-1883) seated. Between 1836 and 1848, the legendary Texas Ranger served Texas in several military capacities, particularly as a Ranger captain. He migrated to California in 1850, where he served as San Francisco's first sheriff and, later, became involved in politics. He retired from politics and the military during the Civil War. This image is handsomely framed to an overall size of 12.5" x 14.5".

Provenance: Mathew Brady and Frederick Hill Meserve.
