Civil War/Reconstruction: 1864 Virginia Constitutional Convention CDV Album. 5" x 6" brass and green leather carte-de-visite album owned by Edwin R. Gover of Kansas, Illinois. Prior to living in Illinois, Gover resided in Loudon County, Virginia during the Civil War. The book contains twenty-four [24] CDVs plus one carte of an unidentified woman. The first image in the album shows Francis Harrison Pierpont (1814-1899), provisional Governor of Western Virginia, Governor of the restored state of Virginia (1863) and Governor of post-war Virginia (1865-1868). The album's index identifies him plus twenty-five people, all of whom attended the State Constitutional Convention in Alexandria held February 13-April 11, 1864. Seventeen delegates represented thirteen counties and four cities then under Union control. The President of the Convention was Leroy G. Edwards, a Presidential Elector for Jefferson Davis in the Confederate election of November 1861. Many of the cartes are autographed and most were taken by Bowdoin & Taylor of Alexandria. Gover appears in uniform and has signed his portrait. The last carte in the album is "J. Thompson, State Janitor", an African American gentleman. Partial split to spine with some looseness to binding. Appears to be a complete photographic record of the delegates to this important event. Great crossover appeal to Civil War, photographic and Virginia collectors.
