Description

Civil War Period Unmounted Albumen Print By A. J. Biddle Of Andersonville Prison. Andrew Jackson Biddle, became known as the 'Andersonville Photographer' and to our knowledge all interior views of the prison, while it was in operation, were executed by him. We have never seen any of these images available before and after careful examination strongly believe they were originally part of the Brady/ Handy collection. Levin Handy being Brady's son in law, who took over the studio after his death. Each image is signed on the back "Handy" . Although the images are unquestionably period and have superb definition, we are also of the opinion that they are period copies, likely executed by Brady's studio or Handy himself of a series of images, probably cartes-de-visites, published by Biddle at the end of, or very shortly after the war. Most rare, and the only examples we have ever seen offered for sale, they were consigned from the trust of a now deceased collector who was active for 70 years in the southern tier of New York state. This example is negative 8217, signed on the back by Handy and is illustrated in "Mr. Lincoln's Cameraman" on P. 142. The image was identified by the collector as "Looking southwest from the guard post just north of the Stockade Creek, on the east wall of the prison. The trees at right center shade the star fort and Henry Wirz's headquarters." Hundreds of tents in the background with a haze of smoke hanging over the prison. Based on the visible activity the double rail fence in the foreground was obviously the latrine. Very fine condition, just a hint of fading and a couple of light, negligible creases. As with all of the images in this series an extremely rare and historically important Civil War photograph.
