Civil War Era Cartes-de-Visite: Writers, Inventors, Artists, Performers, Etc. Collection of fifty CDVs, mostly done by Anthony/Brady. We picture twenty-seven [27] of the more valuable or interesting examples. The subjects include: P. T. Barnum & Commodore Nutt (quite unusual!), architect of the Capitol Thomas U. Walter, pioneer conservationist George Perkins Marsh, Mr. & Mrs. General Tom Thumb, World Champion Chess Player Paul Morphy, Samuel F. B. Morse, humorist Artmeus Ward, Cyrus Field, Temperance advocate Father Matthew, Judge Joseph Story, sculptor Erasmus Dow Palmer, Louis Agassiz, opera diva Madame Medori, English statesman Edward Stanley, travel writer Henry Wikoff, Arctic explorer Elisha Kent Kane, theologian James Orr, Rembrandt Peale, poet Lydia Huntley Sigourney, composer William V. Wallace, poet & literary critic Bayard Taylor, poet Martin Tupper, artist Frederick Church, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Horace Mann, William Cullen Bryant and Oliver Wendell Holmes. All but three of these have Anthony/Brady back marks. The balance (twenty-three items not pictured) are all identified, all but one with Anthony/Brady back mark, depicting theologians, writers, educators, surgeons, etc. Famous way back when, but not now.
