Civil War 1/6th Plate Ambrotype and Confederate Enlistment Document for Joseph W. Howerton, South Carolina 18th Infantry Regiment.
Comprising: 1) 1/6 plate ambrotype of a young Confederate soldier dressed in a uniform consistent with the style worn early in the War in South Carolina. The buttons and collar braid of his uniform have been gilded by hand, and if examined under a loupe, the SC insignia is visible in the buttons. The image is housed in an embossed leather case with an ornate gilt mat under glass. Accompanied by C.S.A., State of South Carolina enlistment document, one page, 8 x 9 ½-inches, dated December 20, 1861, Columbia, South Carolina, partially printed, the remainder completed in manuscript. Howerton, aged 24, was born in Albany, New York, and is listed as a coach maker by trade. His enlistment was for three years, with a handwritten addendum "or during the war". The document is signed by the recruiting officer, B. J. Witherspoon and docketed on the verso. Research indicates that Howerton enlisted as a private and mustered into "A" Company of the South Carolina 18th Infantry. Little is known of his actual military service, but one document found online indicates that he deserted January 1, 1862 and was arrested and returned to his regiment August 31, 1863.

Condition: An excellent and particularly sharp image. The leather case is scuffed and the lid has detached. The enlistment document is uniformly toned with some fading along the right margin. Small area of loss at the corners and edges and with old smoothed, fold creases. Mounting remnants on the verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
