    Description

Charlton Morgan Carte de Visite with Clipped Signature. 2.5" x 4", with a John L. Gihon's, Philadelphia imprint on verso. A three quarter portrait of Morgan seated, wearing an opened jacket and a kepi hat. On verso has been written in pencil in an unknown hand, "Capt Charlton Morgan." Accompanying the photograph is a clipped signature, 2.75" x 0.75", taken from a larger document that reads, "C. H. Morgan Prisoner of War." Charlton "Charly" Hunt Morgan was the younger brother of famed cavalry general John H. Morgan. Before the war, he had been serving as the U.S. Consul to Messina, Italy and had even fought in the Italian independence rebellion. He resigned his position in 1861 and returned home and joined the Confederate Army. At the Battle of Shiloh, he was wounded and taken prisoner, but was soon exchanged. Following his release, he joined his brother's Kentucky Regiment, but both brothers were captured in July 1863 during Morgan's Ohio Raid. This photograph was taken while Morgan was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. He is also the father of Thomas Hunt Morgan, whose work in chromosomal heredity earned him the Nobel Prize in 1933. This image of Morgan can be found in Ronald S. Coddington's Faces of the Confederacy: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories, on page 62. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light foxing throughout, with toning at the edges. There are two small red streaks on verso. The clipped signature is lightly toned throughout, but is very good overall.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
