    Winfield Scott Signed Twice Carte de Visite. 2.25" x 4", a standing portrait in uniform, with an E. Anthony, New York backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Winfield Scott, 1861" and on verso: "For My friend – Miss Cornelia King, to whose grand father, father & uncles, I have owed, for long years, the most pleasing obligations, Winfield Scott."

    Winfield Scott (1786-1866) gained fame as a young hero in the War of 1812 and, along with Zachary Taylor, achieved great victories in the Mexican War. In 1852, he ran a campaign for the Whig Presidential candidate. He also served as a senior U.S. Military commander during the early days of the Civil War and was the architect of the "Anaconda" strategy, which ultimately defeated the Confederacy.

    Condition: Toning and uneven areas of soiling. Light foxing. The corners are slightly worn.
