Winfield S. Hancock Carte de Visite Signed "Winfd. S. Hancock Brig Gen: vols." 2.5" x 4", with an R. W. Addis, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait, with Hancock seen in uniform, facing slightly to his right. The famous Union general has signed on the mount below the photograph. Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) is well known for his success at Gettysburg, particularly his efforts on the front lines during Pickett's Charge, where he was wounded towards the end of the fighting. He was transported by ambulance to Westminster, then Baltimore and on to Philadelphia. By October, although the wound was still open, he was able to walk with a cane and resume command of the Second Corps. It was this sort of fortitude and loyalty that led President Grant to say: "Hancock stands the most conspicuous figure of all the general officers who did not exercise a separate command. He commanded a corps longer than any other one, and his name was never mentioned as having committed in battle a blunder for which he was responsible." After the war, Hancock was tasked with overseeing the execution of Lincoln's assassination conspirators. He went on to command the Department of the Missouri and even made a bid for president in the election of 1880. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light edge toning, with minor foxing at the top, else very good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
