DescriptionWilliam S. Rosecrans Signed Carte de Visite. 2.25" x 4", seated portrait in his uniform, with a Bocarolus, New York backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "W.S. Rosecrans Maj Genl."
William S. Rosecrans (1819-1898) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1842. When the Civil War began, he served briefly as an aide-de-camp to General McClellan but was soon promoted and given command of his own regiment, the 23rd Ohio Infantry. On May 16, 1861, he was made brigadier general. He achieved early success in the Western Theater and fought at Iuka, Corinth, and Stones River. At the Battle of Chickamauga, a poorly worded order by Rosecrans resulted in a crushing loss by the Union, and Grant arrived at Chattanooga to relieve Rosecrans of his command.
Condition: Light edge toning and soiling at the upper edge. Minor soiling on verso. Bumping to the edges and wear to the corners. Some discoloration at the photo edges.
