William H. Seward & Foreign Diplomats in 1863 Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", no photographer's backmark. Pictured with Seward are Baron, De Stoeckel, Russian Minister; M. Molena, Nicaraguan Minister; Lord Lyons, British Minister; M. Mercier, French Minister; M. Schleiden, Hanseatic Minister; M. Berenatti, Italian Minister; Count Piper, Swedish Minister; M. Bodisco, Secretary Rusian Legation; Mr. Sheffeld, Attache British Legation; Mr. Donaldson, a messenger in the State Department. At the time this photo was taken the British were outfitting Confederate cruisers and the French were building ships for the Confederates while the Russian Fleet, wintering in New York and San Francisco may have made the British and French have second thoughts on entering the war on the side of the Confederate States. Excellent condition.
