Ward Hill Lamon Carte de Visite Signed. 2.25" x 4". Lamon, the close friend and bodyguard of President Lincoln, writes in ink on the reverse, "With Compliments of Ward H. Lamon." In the full-length portrait, Lamon directly faces the camera, while his right hand rests on a chair. Toned with minor staining. Penciled notations exist on the verso below Lamon's signature. Also on the verso is the printed imprint of photographer B. P. Paige of Washington, D.C.

Lamon and Lincoln were law partners in Danville, Illinois, throughout the mid-1850s. Lamon later joined the Republican Party, campaigning for Lincoln's presidential bid in 1860. After Lincoln's election, Lamon joined him at the capital and was appointed U.S. Marshal of the District of Columbia. He often represented himself as the president's bodyguard. Unfortunately, he was absent on the night the president was assassinated (he was on assignment in Richmond). In 1872, Lincoln's former law partner published a biography of Lincoln.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
