    Union Soldiers: Robert and Kady Brownell Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4". Both husband and wife are seated wearing uniforms and armed. Born in South Africa, Kady migrated to Rhode Island, where she met and married Robert Brownell. When he joined the Union Army (1st Rhode Island Infantry), she also signed on, serving in different capacities, such as color bearer. Both Robert and Kady served in the 1st and, later, 5th Rhode Island Infantry. She is known as the only woman to receive military discharge papers, even receiving a pension in 1884. No photographer's imprint. Minor soiling. Mounting remnants in the margins of the front.
