The first, affixed to a Mathew Brady mount to an overall size of 2.5" x 4", features Torbert in a three-quarter portrait in uniform with his hands behind his back. The second, also affixed to a Brady mount measuring 2.5" x 4", features a vignetted chest up portrait of Thomas in uniform, looking slightly to his left.

Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert (1933-1880) was initially appointed a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, but chose to remain in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of brevet major general by war's end. He commanded infantry and cavalry units during the war and served during the Maryland Campaign, sustaining a wound at the Battle of South Mountain, and the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Fisher's Hill, and Tom's Brook. After the war, he served as U.S. consul to El Salvador, Havana, and Paris. He met an untimely end when he drowned off the coast of Florida when the ship he was on, the SS Vera Cruz, sank.
